Video row case dropped.
posted by: M44 - Friday 5th December, 2008
No action will be taken following a police investigation into claims a CAP councillor posted derogatory comments about the Cadishead candidate Jimmy Hunt in the local elections of May this year.
Wigan councillor, Edward Houlton posted a video on You Tube criticising the Labour councillor for Cadishead, Mr Hunt in the run up to the Council elections. The Labour Party felt the video warranted an investigation under the Representation of the Peoples Act, stating the film could breach election rules.
Mr Houlton was interviewed by police and had computers siezed from his home. He was arrested in Spetember and bailed while investigations continued.
After reviewing the case, the CPS decided to drop the charges, saying there was no realistic chance of a conviction.
Mr Houlton, a representative of the Lowton ward of Wigan, said 'Richard Houlton, my brother, replaced Roger Jones as councillor for Irlam in Salford. Naturally this upset plans for the congestion charge and Labour wanted to attack someone.'
Mr J Hunt, who lost his Cadishead seat in the election to the Conservative Party, said he was 'very disappointed by the decision not to press charges.'
